Sept. 28

U 339 Another snoozer. I got through lock 19 around 8. That lock is the largest on the Mississippi. It's 1200 feet long and can handle 18 barges and a towboat. After the lock the current picked up some. (Sweet) I got to lock 20 just As a northbound tow pulled into the lock. They told me I'd have to wait 1 1/2 hours minimum. I got out below the lock and talked to everyone and watched the process. Pretty interesting. Some recently learned facts: a barge full of grain weighs 15 tons...the tow boats here on the upper Mississippi typically have 6 to 8 thousand horsepower. The lower Mississippi tows can have over 10,000 HP. YIKES! Tomorrow is Hannibal mo. Jenny will meet me with a resupply and some r&r. One more thing. Iowa is toast. It's Missouri on the right and Illinois on the left.
